In its kind it is actually the better one. It is also a challenge - to make a movie suitable for general audience. Not too many great movies manage that.

BurnsyCEO said:No thats much easier.Just see all the disney movies. They're entertaining and do bits of everything just like summer wars and are made to be watched by the whole family. So they never get very dark or serious or deep.Disney does it all better anyway.
Summer wars was a nice movie but it isn't something that you miss out on if you never watch it. I'm sure you'll agree.

I'll check this one out.Sindar said:Its a good comparison. Its a bit unfair though, since Disney is pretty much the unbeaten leader in that segment. I'd still say among what Japanese animation has to offer Summer Wars is about the top choice for family friendly entertainment. And I am sure we need more of this kind of movies if we want anime to gain wider appreciation =) But I won't argue, it is not ground breaking in any way, as far as I remember.

Some anime or family friendly and anime got potential unlike cartoon.BurnsyCEO said:Japan should stick to what they do best which is make shows we like to watch alone and leave the family stuff to disney. Its not like either side can compete for the market share of the other.

It can replace cartoon.

Tell me what you think about it after you've seen it =)
I kinda don't think anime would need to compete with Western cartoons, cause now it is mostly CGI movies. And I personally think that drawn 2d animation and CGI animation are two different types of entertainment, they don't necessarily compete directly.

they can never be able to compete with anime.
Sindar said:I don't see why not =)
Nel said:Because they all have the easy-going air to them and it's difficult to think that they can compete with anime.
Sindar said:It's only a question of when someone decides to make a more serious cartoon though. There is this short Canadian animation "The old man and the sea", look it up. If Disney managers decide that things like that are becoming popular we might see very different cartoons =)
But anyway, I don't wanna say that there is no difference between the depth of some better Japanese cartoons and usual western stuff. But I think that in many ways it is the result of the anime artists having different kinds of restrictions, compared with the western animators.

Still, I don't get what you mean by restrictions though
Star_Of_Hope said:I see.
I didn't know all that
I always thought of that as the targeted audience approach.
Still, I believe kids from western countries act more spoiled when compared to Japanese people.
Movies got nothing to do with their nature. That's what I believe
