Do you know why he is a kid?

I've heard a review of the series on a podcast, and the story as I remember it was that Conan was a high school student, or maybe even older, and he was doing an amateur investigating; something went wrong and he ended up being caught or something of the sort, but instead of killing him on the spot people who caught him used some sort of drug or substance that transformed his body into this child form that he is stuck with. I don't know who much of it is true, people who make reviews on podcasts get facts wrong all the time : D

So now he has to hide his true identity while tracking these men, whose organization is so large and evil, that the FBI from America are even after them, but they cannot even bring them down due to how dangerous this organization is.

There seems to be a lot of parallels between Shinichi and Sherlock Holmes, from what you said it seems Shinichi has kinda the same semi-professional status and even the name Conan - kind of minds me of Conan Doyle =)

also according to me the best anime episode that I have ever watched is from this anime

the last I read was 900 and that was a month ago

I dropped if after watching like 4 episodes -.-
The first episode looked unrealistic and the protagonist didn't look like a great detective to me. The series is too long and I am not so sure about whether or not it is worth watching. Does it get better later?

My opinion, yes it does get better. Especially when the series focuses on the main plot and key characters are introduced. I recommend to people who say it is too long to skip the filler episodes if they want to watch it. It cuts the series in half.

I'll put in in my 'to watch' list then. I don't know when I'll start watching it though. My 'to watch' list is just too long.
It actually has over 300 fillers O.O

if u like plot maybe this is not for u
because the plot progresses very slowly but when it does it blows ur mind away

its like u get 10-12 episodes of plot and then u have 100 episodes of "cases" which don't have plot progression

but the cases(canon) are out of this world
absolutely mind blowing , impossible crimes, locked room murders, its pure genius
if u like sherlock holmes,agatha christy u will definitely like this, its like cis, castle etc type of shows but better and more detective like


also those 10-12 episodes are absolute brilliance , the plot , the progression , the twists,the unpredictability is just out of the world
