Voice actors singing the actual song is very rare.
Still, it's good to listen to those songs.

All of Toradora's OP and ED were performed by the voice cast.
Vanilla Salt is the first ED of Toradora and it's pretty good.

Every one of zombieland saga's songs were performed by the voice actors who were also in a band. And that's why that show has some of the best musical performances I've heard.

It’s almost like a requirement now.

It’s more like an easier way to milk merchandising if you get your VA’s to sing a song, so you can sell the single for money, as opposed to paying to license a song.

Auto-tune exists, and Japanese producers aren’t very good at using it. It doesn’t help with the delivery, as some singers obviously aren’t great, but at least they’re on pitch now.

You’d be surprised on what technologies they’re behind on. Their live action movies and tv shows (not related to anime) look cheap compared to American stuff, because we have a bigger budget than they do. Some of their music production stuff is still behind.

With autotune, there’s two ways to use it. One way is as a robotic effect, so that’s just applied as a filter. The other way is for pitch correction. You’re supposed to edit the notes that are off to make the singing sound cleaner, but you can be lazy and just slap it on there, and you can hear the note getting retuned in the middle of the performance.

Streaming is a big thing they've been behind for so long.

Part of that could be the high attachment to physical media there. CD’s are super strong there.
