There'd be no Konoha if he didn't slaughter them and Danzo would have killed Sasuke if he didn't kill them so it's not like he had any choice either.

i told to sase somewhere in my posts that he should have seen through danzo.
if he avoided danzo and didn't join anbu , he might have even become the hokage

itachi might have survived along with sasuke without having blood on his hands. if he is as caring and understanding, he would have understood the need for his clan to get eliminated.
