RPG Directories

I know that forum based role playing is in a state of serious decline, especially over the past few years (okay, decade), but I had recently found a glimmer of hope. I had never heard of role playing directories before. These are websites that are specifically designed to advertise for role playing games. In fact, the idea of dedicating an entire forum to a role playing game is just something I can't seem to wrap my head around. I've heard of, and have been hosting a forum for a long time, dedicated to anime and role playing, and the combination thereof, but there's always been other topics for discussion, and multiple games to participate in.

I took a look around these directories, joined a few of them even, and I have to say that I'm rather disappointed in them. Turns out that not only are they fairly strict regarding the qualifications just to add your site to the directory listing (one directory requires a minimum of 500 members before you can think about adding your site!), that's just bonkers to me! Many of the role playing game boards that I've investigated turned out to be mostly dead, with recent activity at the minimum of a couple months ago. And as for the directory sites themselves, practically on autopilot. Several sites have a Discord as well, but from the few that I've tried to inquire the status of the forum sites, the admins seem to only be interested in receiving messages from friends-- so if you're a new or potential member, good luck getting any sort of attention!

I'm disappointed, in that I have a couple of games in mind, but I can't launch them just yet because I need people to play with! One of which, I'm excited about is a game based around the fictional world of FARTS. It's an idea I've tried to launch several times in the past with slightly different mechanics, and every time it fails, simply because I don't have any body to play with. So, I'll just keep the game idea shelved for now.

Anyway, sorry, I guess I needed to rant.

sorry to hear that.
people are impatient these days hun and they don't have time for anything and just scroll through everything

Ugh, I miss RP forums, they were so much fun back in the day with Naruto, bleach and other series. But yeah directories in general are hard to get into for a site.

A role playing forum is a forum specifically dedicated to the act of writing a multi-authored story, usually like a fan fiction. Sometimes there are special modifications added, like dice rollers and map viewers and other thing. Those are what I've seen recently. Then there's your typical forum that has a special section on it dedicated to role play. The forum I administer is more like the latter, although the entire forum is dedicated toward a combination of anime and role playing with some free-form creativity added in for fun.

However, many of the dedicated role playing forums I've recently sought out, appear to be ...lacking in activity at the moment.

There are also directories like Apexwebgaming, Topwebgames and MMORPG that have directories for RPG games as well. They've been around for a few years. Some of their games might be somewhat outdated and no longer active. To my knowledge, they don't have forums on their sites though.

I've never been good at text based roleplays. I've always preferred RPG video games as well as live action roleplaying and I would larp when I was a kid. My best friend and I used to larp Digimon and Teen Titans and I larped with my childhood crush too lol. I know it's hard to find one that's still around, either they start up and don't get off the ground or the old ones just get moved to Discord.

Yeah, forum role playing is difficult. There's usually a ton of excitement upon beginning a new game, creating the characters, and then life always gets in the way, distracting everybody with little todo's here and there. Then the game dies, and a new one gets started.

I think the secret (patent pending) is finding people who enjoy the process of simply creative writing. And then, to find people who, collectively as a group, agree on a story/plot to work together! LOL Maybe I'm on to something here, time might tell...
