Anime Review: Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss is a Summer 2017 anime that wasn't very popular at first but as weeks went on, caught steam due to word of mouth.

Number of episodes: 13

Plot:
An enormous pit and cave system called the "Abyss" is the only unexplored place in the world. Strange and wonderful creatures reside in its depths, and it is full of precious relics that current humans are unable to make. The mysteries of the Abyss fascinate humans, and they head down to explore. The adventurers who venture into pit are known as "Cave Raiders." A little orphan girl named Rico lives in the town of Ōsu on the edge of the Abyss. Her dream is to become a Cave Raider like her mother and solve the mysteries of the cave system. One day, Rico starts exploring the caves and discovers a robot who resembles a human boy.

Art(9/10): The art is just gorgeous. Every frame is detailed and really lush. It makes you want to go to that world.
Animation(8.5/10): The animation is really fluid, and consistent throughout the whole series.
Characters(9/10): The anime has great characters, who are really compelling. The great thing is that the main characters are all children and they don't come across as annoying. The anime is focused more on the characters than on action sequences or 'world-building'.
Story(8.5/10): The story is very intriguing and the anime does a wonderful job of hooking you in the first episode. It's filled with everything: drama, mystery, action, comedy.
Dialogues(8/10): The great thing about this anime is that it doesn't spend a lot of time on expository dialogue to explain the world. It's a good case of 'show, don't tell'. So, the things that characters speak are necessary things that convey their thoughts or feelings and not narration that explain the plot.
Soundtrack(8.5/10): The soundtrack is excellent. It elevates the anime and makes you feel exactly what the anime demands.
Action(8/10): The action sequences aren't the major focus of the series, but when they happen, they vary from really fun to pretty brutal. The animation is at its best when the action kicks.
Voice Acting(8.5/10): The voice acting is pretty good. All of them are children, so, there's a high probability of their voices to turn out to be annoying, but they were very good.
Tone: The anime has an adventurous tone as a whole, but as the series goes on, some dark and horrible stuff happen so it's not always something that has a light and fun tone. But, this is something that can be uneven at times.
Pacing: The pacing is a bit slow. A few episodes in the mid-portion of the series slows down a lot, and it may seem like nothing is happening. The art quality and animation dips quite a bit too, or becomes stale, rather.

Overall, this is a very, very good anime, with great characters, art, animation, sound. I highly recommend it.
Score: 8.3/10.

Looks interesting. I like the graphics but the character drawings are kinda plain though.

I see. It's good then. I will watch it soon. You should have recommended it for the october anime :p

It's about some black hole in the middle of a earth which people are trying to explore. It's an interesting concept. I will be adding this to my list.

Watch out for the somewhat slow pacing. Other than that, it's very good.

Oh, yes, definitely. I liked Boku no Hero Academia season 1, but season 2 was phenomenal. I loved it a lot. Especially the Hero Killer arc.

Then you must have seen the other popular series SNK as well. It is going to get a third season too.

Yes, I have. Though, I didn't like it as much as Season 1. I really, really liked episodes 4-11 of season 2, but 1-3 were a little iffy, and episode 12 felt like it was padding for run-time, and they were just compensating it by showing some spectacular animation.
Hopefully, season 3 lasts 24 episodes. They have enough manga chapters for that.

They would go for 12 episodes rather than 24 episodes. Most of the anime these days have 12 episodes or 13 episodes.

Not denying that, but that's usually for the first season of the anime, and mainly for two reasons: the anime is usually a marketing tool used to boost the manga or the light novel sales, and the second reason being budget in that the Japanese aren't known to take a lot of risks so if it's just 12 episodes, it won't cause them as much financial trouble.

Shingeki no Kyojin is the most popular manga in terms of sales among the manga that released after the 2010's and is consistently in the top 3 or top 5. The first and second seasons were huge hits. They have animated 50 chapters so far, and as of now 98 chapters have been released, with the last 23 part of an on-going arc. That means they have 40 chapters worth of content they can animate that are their own arcs(2 arcs actually, 51-70 and 71-90) and this can easily last for 25 episodes, since Attack on Titan is a monthly manga, which means each chapter has the same amount of content as two chapters of a weekly manga.

Nothing goes as planned. You must have known what happened to bleach.

I was talking about the earlier stages. It was popular but not anymore after the drop in ratings

Season 2 was bound to have a drop in ratings. Season 1 made sure Attack on Titan transcended the niche anime community and became mainstream and known to the general public. Anyway, Season 2 made sure people knew Attack on Titan was back again, and it was a phenomenal hit, and that's more than enough. Season 3 will be a huge hit, that's guaranteed. Unless it's terrible of course.

It was was wondrous and extremely horrific at the same time, what a combination. And absolute god tier ost/atmosphere.

Yeah, those last few episodes were completely amazing. I mean, that hand scene was just... wow.

I get cold sweat and dizziness when I got exposed to pain and gore in real life but never in anime even with all the dark shows I've watched....till that scene. I had to pause twice and sit somewhere else to calm down. The creator such a fucked up guy.
