Is MAL the closest thing to a "true score" we have/can get?

I don’t think you can ever find a “true score”, especially when it comes to aggregate sites. Some of it will depend entirely on what genre that site’s community likes. If a community doesn’t like a genre, you’re not going to get an accurate opinion on it.

but it's the biggest database of anime from what i know and if you can't trust it , then you can't trust anything else.

I don't usually bother too much with them. Some anime i like have a low rating. Though i wouldn't watch something that is a really low rating
