How do you guys rate OVAs and Specials of anime?

or do you think it's fine to think they are just for entertainment and to give closure to an anime?

Personally I've not checked them out as much as I really should have, I'd typically just watch a main series but not explore OVAs/spinoffs/specials etc

I can think of some that far surpass their animes. But usually they're good for extra episodes for fans who haven't got enough.

there are many ovas
and they are relatively good. and ovas are usually both relatively good. but not up to the same as anime series.

They are good for a complete closure and to see people in the anime enjoying themselves
If it's a very sad plot, then these specials are a treat for those anime fans who would want those anime characters to be happy

Most I've seen have been for fun or extreme fan service, usually not a fan of them really.

Sometimes the OVAs can be better then the series that was released. Take Helsing or Tenchi Muyo for example.

Some of them I love personally, some of them I hate myself.
