People have been saying this for ages for all media. Usually popular stuff is cookie cutter and by the book no matter the era. If you stick to just the popular stuff, or just one genre, of course it's going to get repetitive.

There are many restrictions now on the media when compared to the old days. Getting permissions is a lot stricter than you imagine and things change man.
