Full Metal Alchemist had the best rating before it was over-taken by Your Name. Death Note is still the most popular.

Not Gin Tama, Your Name. Your Name is the highest rated anime in MAL. And, yes, while in my opinion, Gin Tama is not as good as FMAB, it's a brilliantly written show.

I'm surprised that no one has watched it, here. It's currently the highest grossing Japanese movie. It's gotten stellar reviews, and I personally think it's excellent.

The visuals are brilliant yes, but that's not the only reason why people like it.

I thought that was the main reason. I didn't think he got a good story to back up with it
 
It is a visually stunning anime, and yes, that is probably the main reason why people like it, but, what's wrong with that, anime is a visual medium, and if it looks like shit, then it will immediately put off people.

I believe that the necessary thing is a good screenplay. All great anime are that, because of a good screenplay. Code Geass, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Steins Gate. See, many anime have had interesting stories, with terrible execution.

Execution not in terms of art and animation. I'm talking screenplay, structure, dialogues, character motivations, etc.
