Far as I'm concern this series is more than worthy of the title of anime. It just does so many things right and better than how Japan does its anime.

Anime literally means anything that's animated, basically a cartoon. From a technical standpoint Avatar is also an anime.
But Avatar has a lot of inspiration from anime so there's nothing wrong in calling it one.
Plus you already made a post in this thread long back so I don't know why you are bringing it up again.

I have seen the movie with the blue people which I absolutely love but not this anime. Is it any good in your opinion? I'm told it is very popular but haven't heard anyone mention it here so I'm a bit skeptical

It's never been mentioned because it's not an anime. It's in the style of anime but it's made in America. But it is extremely popular all over the world, well regarded for its story, characters and animation.

It is technically an anime, anime basically means cartoon but if you go popular definition it's a cartoon.
