Final Fantasy 7 remake

I just went into this game blind, and not having played the OG game thinking I'd get a nice self contained story within the span of one game and that was sort of true till the ending 1/2 chapters when I understood literally nothing of what was happening on screen. And when I went to youtube to try to understand what it was about I had no idea what sort of can of worms I was going to open.

The FF7 remake is not a remake in the traditional sense, it's an alternate reality from the OG game but which is heavily influenced by the actions of the main game and there is no chance of understanding what you were seeing without outside help, which is one of the most unique ways of doing a remake which I have ever seen and they deserve a standing ovation for how well it turned out. And with the help of a few YouTube explanations it makes almost perfect sense which elevates my opinion of this game significantly.

On top of that the remake is only the first part of the OG game apparently and it goes on long enough to make 3 such games at least which I believe are being made right now. Well at least it's not as convoluted as Fate/ lore. @Grungie I'm wondering if you've played either the old or new FF7 and what you think of this remake.

I’ve played both, and I enjoyed the remake. The remake was pretty confusing for fans of the original, because I thought some of the new characters were from the “expanded universe” of FF7, and that’s why I didn’t get it, but they were brand new characters along with new lore. So a lot of that stuff was just as new for me as it was for people who never played the original.

I did enjoy that they expanded on Aerith and the Avalanche members, as the death of all of those characters didn’t leave as much impact, especially with how little screen time Avalanche had in the original.

So do you think this game is better for diverging from the original story or would you and other fans have prefered a traditional remake? And who are the new characters?

Honestly, a shorter list is who's original. Basically the original characters are Avalanche, the Turks, Don Corneo, and the head guys at Shinra. There are some minor ones like Marlene, but outside of that, they're mostly original.

The only reason why I have mixed feelings on them doing a reimagining vs a straight remake has more to do with the new lore being confusing for old fans. It's not like they expanded on pre-existing lore, they created new lore. So it was weird playing a remake and not knowing what was going on.

Though honestly, the fans who wanted a one to one remake would have been upset no matter what.

I'm not really a fan of the battle system in the remake, and I think the story is too different. So I'm going to be honest, I'm not really thrilled about this remake. I want to try and play through it once all the parts are released, who knows how long that's going to take though lol. But until then it's on my PS5 account, I've uninstalled it a long time ago.

I like it quite a bit. Every character played extremely differently and it was a lot of fun switching between them.

Honestly, I haven't try the remake, just seen bits and played some of the original but since I didn't own it I didn't get too far before having to return it. reading the differences between the two games brought up helps a lot with perspective.

I gotta agree with this.

I have a lot of respect for the Reignited trilogy of Spyro because I think it is one of the few games that really walked the remastering of the games in a really good way. Not just upscaling but actually putting effort in redefining the looks of some characters (like the dragons not being the same). I've played the original so long ago, that honestly I am not sure I can discern well the changes/expansion (maybe Spyro's voice direction is the easiest one to spot )but I felt like they understood the OG and did their best to keep the charm and at the same time bring them to a new generation.

The tangent to say, that while FFVII remake is taking a lot of liberties, it seems interesting to see people reactions as they indicate that the game while not being just a remaster is doing something unique while also drawing a lot of the milestones of the original. I thought the changes were adding more context and world building, but it sounds like different turns from the original story has been taken. modifying the established lore is always tricky, more so with devoted fans that have following and know to heart every detail. So it is always encouraging seeing most people being okay with the game.

The fighting combat I feel is probably the thing that will always be very divisive as it is quite the departure to what the fighting used to be for the original. Some people enjoy the real time, some people preferred turn based.

I too want to wait until the trilogy comes in full. I knew it'd take time but I honestly I didn't imagine I'd be talking about in this particular year and still waiting for the rest. I was very skittish when it came to believe the game would be what they promised as a concept, so now that it came out and has been so well received and what I've seen looks so good, I feel more confident in waiting and letting them take their time.

I really hope each part holds up as well as the last. It'll be exciting to play it then.

Reignited trilogy did do a good job recreating the classics. I still prefer the originals though, but I love the changes they made to each level. The only thing they changed that I didn't care for was censoring the guns in Twilight Harbor. In the original, the Gnorcs use guns that shoot bullets and they also throw grenades too. I get why they had to censor it but other than that the remaster was fantastic. I think I'm weary about giving the Final Fantasy VII remake a go because they've changed a bit too much in the story. VII isn't my favorite game in the series, but the story was fantastic.
I don't like that Zack is alive in Rebirth, that completely ruins a good chunk of the original game's story IMO.

Fair. I don't remember very well the segment but given the cartoony style, feels like a bit too much censoring it for the remaster.

Yeah, honestly that makes me hesitate too. I agree with the spoiler sentiment as well. 100%.
