Why is yaoi more popular than yuri ?

i have been thinking this for a while.
how come yuri isn't popular enough and even shojo ai is not too popular.

So, what are you basing this on? I see far more yuri than yaoi, at least with animes.

Probably from MAL
There are more anime and manga for Shonen ai and Yaoi when it comes to Shojo ai and Yuri

Yuri is definitely more popular than yaoi. It probably feels that yaoi is more popular if you’re more of a yaoi fan, and don’t keep up with yuri.

yuri anime in mal are just 32 and yaoi listed are 41. even shonen ai listed in mal are just 99 but shojo ai are even less are 78
that's why i thought of making this thread..

Maybe yaoi is more popular. Bookwalker a japanese publisher has only 78 volumes listed for yuri but has 280 volumes for yaoi. I like yuri better myself but numbers don't lie.

Tbh MAL’s database can be garbage at times, I’ve seen plenty of instances where there are genres listed on a show that doesn’t belong and the opposite. So I would take some things on MAL with a grain of salt as opposed to word of god, despite what some users on this site want to believe.

sorry lol
and for anime fans, it's the only point of reference we got most of the time

It’s hardly the only point of reference. It’s not even the only big name anime/manga site to list what shows you saw.

it's not only lol

but by far it's the biggest and most popular website used by most of the anime fans and i am sure other similar websites like anilist are not this popular

Tbh you’d be surprised, and honestly the only consistent general consensus on what MAL is good at... is making lists on what you read/watch. AniDB has more accurate information, because MAL is kind of notorious for their mods not actually doing their jobs, like having manga series listed as completed, despite being ongoing with consistent updates, etc.

Also apparently only 3% of users actually rate the series in their lists, and of those 3%, they only give 1’s and 10’s as ratings, and the vast majority of the reviews are garbage at best. All the reviews are just 10/10 loved every second, or 1/10, I hated every second (both of which are stretched out to 10 paragraphs). Then there’s the infamous vote brigading by users and review bombing by the community. Honestly, with the aggregate scores, the only real info to gauge out of it is that if it's 7+ a lot of people like the show, and if it's 5 or below, it's probably not good. Anything deeper than that you're not going to get any real info for it.

It’s kind of like how Wikipedia is good for super basic knowledge on certain topics, but you have to do real research to find real info.

I didn’t say anything about standard, I was just ranting about problems with MAL, and how because all your friends use it, doesn’t mean it’s “the” site to use. Also don’t take aggregate scores, especially by amateurs, too seriously.

Not many people stick to anime and they believe it's just a phase man. I have come across too many people saying they have grown out of it.
You would see only those amateurs a lot

Standard for what? Regardless of my opinion on the site, MAL isn’t a standard for basically anything. You’d be surprised how many people don’t use the site.

really? most people in yo use it
that's how it became so difficult for me to accept anything else as of now.

That’s why I mentioned earlier about the fact that because everyone in your circle of friends use it, doesn’t mean it’s “the standard”. In my case, most people I know don’t use it, for widely varying reasons, many of which have nothing to do with opinions on the quality of the site. Many people don’t see a need to make a list of what’s shows they saw. My MAL account is mostly outdated, since Plex tracks my watch history for me, and my manga reading app tracks what chapter I’m on. I go on other anime communities, so I get recs from there, or irl friends/coworkers suggest stuff to me. I don’t need to go to MAL to go “omg, this show is a 8.7, I HAVE to check it out.

Also I know what I like and don’t like, so should I really care that a show I really love is listed as a 6.8 on an aggregate site? My answer is no.

i understand that just telling how it was for me
and you are right it wouldn't be a standard just because most people use it .
