What Demon said. There aren't a lot of people who buy merchandise, it's a niche and those who are willing to buy stuff don't mind splurging. It's predatory but makes sense from a business perspective. It's also why in Japan a 13 episode anime has 5 Blu-Ray sets even though it can be fit in 1.
