Why do anime characters use flip phones more than smart phones?

Is it because flip phones are popular in Japan?
Or do you think they look cool for an anime character? What do you guys think?

Flip phones are slowly disappearing in Japan, and you’ll see more smartphones in recent anime. Season 3 of A Certain Magical Index looked a little dated, because it came out 8 years after season 2, so Misaka’s flip phone sticks out like a sore thumb.

So you could either be seeing an older series through recent eyes, or the show is old, but still ongoing, and the technology wasn’t updated.

I haven't noticed that.

either its still popular in Japan or in that time period of the anime, or easier to draw for whatever reason.

I see.
That makes sense.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's just because that was what was typically used in Japan. Admittedly, I thought flip-phones were still the dominant phone type until I read @Grungie's post.
I don't think I've seen an anime yet where characters mostly use smartphones, but I wonder if it's something I'd even really notice.

I watch a lot of slice of life stuff, and they primarily use smartphones, they even joke with characters who use a flip phone like “woah, you STILL use one?”

Well a recent one was Kaguya-Sama Love is War, the titular character was the only one with a flip phone, it was the whole irony of her family being filthy rich, and she still had a flip phone.

Smart phones were showing up in anime around like 2013.

Even I didn't know that.
Mostly because people still have a lot of flip phones in anime and this is news to me

It’s probably a psychological effect (probably not the right term, but whatever), but you probably ignore or overlook it when characters have smart phones, as they’d pretty synonymous now, but you instantly notice someone is using a smart phone because nobody uses them anymore,

It’s like when you watch a movie, and someone whips out an iPhone, you don’t bat an eye, but the second someone whips out a Motorola Razer or a 90’s brick phone, you’ll notice.

When I watched Strawberry Marshmallow like 12 years ago, I didn’t notice the main character’s old style flip phone, or their CRT, but when I watched it last year, I was like “oh yeah, this show is that old...”

I don’t remember the first one I saw that showed a smartphone, but I do recall back in 2014 that one of the characters in Kagerou Daze had one.

that's cool
let me see if i can find a video clipping for it. i was so sure even in 2015 flip phones are still used in anime

Smartphones are rare in anime. We should note that even flip phones can have smartphone functionality.
So may be they are using phones like that in anime.
