Why do anime characters sometimes switch between English and Japanese?

Is it to make them look more sophisticated?
So, what do you guys think about this? For me, it doesn't matter all that much. Is it the same for you?

It’s definitely done to show off. It’s the opposite of when weabs randomly throw in Japanese to show off to their friends they know a random word in Japanese.

lol and sometimes it's just unintentional.
and most of the time, i know they use english without them knowing that they are doing lol. that's just my observation
