Why are all the protagonists(most of them) are mediocre and still reach the top?

This happens a lot. No matter if others have a genetic ability or some extreme rare power, the protagonist can surpass them just by working hard. This happens a lot in most of the main stream anime and I don't get it.
 
I guess people like seeing an underdog develop and get stronger. People got bored of isekai where the protagonist is the opposite and is too overpowered.

It can get exciting initially but most of the anime are following the same trend. I, for one, don't see this happening a lot in real life. If you don't have money and power , you won't get far but I understand your point. Thanks.

You don’t watch anime to experience real life. It’s kind of weird where some of you guys draw the line in your suspension of disbelief. Out of all the unrealistic things that happen in anime, it’s weird to draw the line with underdog protagonists.
 
i don't think it's bad.
one can always dream and at least it's happening in anime lol.
 
Like Grungie said it's because people like to see ordinary people like themselves beat the odds. And Publishers push anime and manga like that because it brings in steady viewers more then the super OP perfect character stories do.

I find most of things strange and it doesn't restrict to this one.
There are too many to list and I just want to know if it's just me. That is the whole point of this thread and not to criticize or make fun of others opinions.
 
Why? Because that's the formula for mainstream shonen. Casual anime watcher like it so it will not change even though already used for literally years
