Whitewashing in live action anime

Honestly a lot of anime characters look simply plain white, so hard to whitewash most of them. And I don't think our movie industry is well setup to cover most races fairly.

Tbh a lot of complaints about this kind of stuff is very America-centric with this ideology, as race in America is largely based off of more generic stuff like white people, Latino, Asian, etc. Most people complaining about white washing are usually people who wants the generic race to do it, not actually be accurate. A movie about Peru? Let’s have the cast be Mexican, Puerto Rican, and the one Spanish guy. I don’t understand why Latinos are angry about this casting....

Also the same ignorance also comes into play with movies that take place in Europe. Does it really make sense to have American, British, and a Canadian actor all play Romans, and speak with a BBC accent? No, it’s still white people, who cares that nobody is Italian.

A recent example is the Aladdin remake: It was more of a Bollywood movie than something that's "Arabian" and the actress who plays Jasmine wasn't a native either. It's all tokenism, they don't actually spend the time and effort to do things properly.

Half the cast was Arab, just from various countries who speak different unintelligible dialects of Arabic. There were a bunch of Iranians in there too, who don’t speak Arabic. Naomi Scott might be the only main cast member who is Indian.

Though yeah, people complaining about whitewashing were oblivious to good chunk of the cast as non-Arab, but they saw brown people and thought “oh, this is okay”. Shows the half-hearted attempt at trying to not be racist, but still being racist at the same time.

I’m one of those people who believes in either going all out, or just don’t bother trying at all. That was my issue with the casting of Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell. They chose to not hire an Asian actor, but used CGI to make her look Asian. If you were gonna make her look Asian, why not hire an Asian? Or just keep her white if you’re casting someone white.

I feel the halfway attempt is where it’s actually offensive.

Yeah it's all symbolic empty gestures that don't mean anything. Although Scarlett was made to look Asian? That's... dreadful.
Disney is probably among the worst with half-assed attempts so I don't bother with their movies all that much.

Yeah that movie could have been handled a bit better.

i agree with that movie too
and it looks like i am not the only one who thinks the effort can be appreciated in anime world

Not just you.
I think the same too but only sometimes and it depends on the story progress and execution.
