When Is 'Pretentious' a Valid Criticism?

so what do you all think?
i like that in anime character and i am sure it's not criticism material at all. what do you feel?

and mostly it's about a character here and i don't think any show can be considered only pretentious lol

When someone calls a show pretentious, usually it’s code word for “it’s weird and I didn’t like it”, or they’re trying to make themselves seem smarter than they are. People like misusing it like how they misuse overrated.

i was sure they meant to say 'it's trying to be death note but it's not' and i was like nothing can be like death note

Death Note really isn’t that hard to copy.

it's the best anime out there and i highly doubt any other anime can be as good as death note, when it comes to detective stuff.

The second half is pretty terrible, and I’m hardly alone with that. It’s just a detective show, and the only thing that makes it stick out is that Light is a protagonist instead of an antagonist, and how he kills people.

No, it’s just that Near and Mellow were dumb and unnecessary. It felt like they artificially dragged it out to make it longer. That’s why I think the second half is terrible.
 
Guilty Crown is a good example of it. It's trying have all these themes and grand scopes but it's as deep as a puddle and boring as sin.

but why is it prentious? and i don't think it's got really good smart characters or any grand plot.
 
It all comes down to personal preference again
Also, if too many people try to stick with something, then somehow that would become a standard.

I don't think any particular word can be valid or invalid in criticism, it is the criticism as a whole that could be weighed as valid or not based on argument presented.
 
I think if a show genuinely is pretentious then yeah it can be a valid criticism (though as Grungie pointed out, it's often a misused word).
As for a character, you can dislike a pretentious character sure but I don't think you can fairly consider it an actual flaw... unless the character just comes off pretentious due to poor writing

you told me what a ship is lol. and until then, i didn't know that it's just relationship in anime.
