What ruins your enjoyment of an opening?

Yeah it really comes down to the song for me, if I find it irritating then it doesnt really matter how good the visuals are I'll have to skip it.
While I do listen to a good bit of Japanese music, sometimes certain singers just don't sound right to my Western ears, it can just sound kind of awkward to me so in those instances I'll have to skip it.

Tbh, unless it's a more traditional Japanese style song, being Western is kind of irrelevant. A lot of those singers are just quirky in general. A lot of that stuff also exists in Western music, but it's more relegated to underground stuff, with rare instances like the Smashing Pumpkins getting mass popularity.

Maybe, I'm no stranger to weird music though which is why I always figured it was just not being super accustomed to japanese voices. Even with other genres like Shoegaze and such where the singers aren't doing anything super out there, it can still sound really off to me.

I’ve just watched anime for almost 30 years, and I’ve been on anime forums for like 15 years. That and I don’t only watch the anime equivalent to Top 40 radio. So I was exposed to other stuff.

That makes sense.
People don't always watch the anime having a rating less than 7 in MAL and that's a biased opinion

Top 40 radio means it’s the most popular stuff, nothing to do with the rating.

Only 40 anime can get that to that ranking.
I am sure there are many hidden gems in the normal list as well.

there is no way for us to watch the anime in muted way and we wouldn't be able to enjoy it
