What if anime doesn't have too many genres?

i think if we don't have too many genres then we wouldn't be able to attract a lot of audience? do you all agree?

A lot of the community only watches the same 2 genres, so I doubt most would notice if those weren’t affected

Then it wouldn't be too interesting to all the anime fans out there.
As I watch limited genres, I wouldn't watch too much if some of these genres were to disappear

Everyday on Twitter I see people call AoT or Demon Slayer peak so it'd only be a problem if battle shounen disappears

Not just 2 man. I believe most of the folks like Slice of Life, battle, sports, horror mostly.
Not really, that’s just a vocal minority. If you see what’s really popular, it’s primarily battle anime and some of the isekai’s that completely overshadow the popularity of the other genres. If you go to stores like GameStop or big box stores like Walmart and Target, they only have merch from stuff like AoT, MHA and Demons Slayer, along with a smaller section with old shows like DBZ and Naruto. So you can see what the actual popular shows are.

When you're in a niche community, there's always going to be a disconnect between what's popular within the community vs what's actually popular.

that makes a lot of sense.
i didn't realise that based on the merchandise alone we can get to know what's actually popular

If you see random people at random stores wearing the shirts and stuff on a fairly regular basis, it's definitely popular. The same thing with going to a big box store and seeing a shelf dedicated to shirts of it is also a sign. A big box store isn't going to have a shelf dedicated to a show if it wasn't popular. People are obviously buying it.

Anime stores will have merch of stuff that's popular in the anime community, so I'll see merch for Love Live and Fate in them, along with stuff like AoT and Demon Slayer, but major retail stores will only have merch for shows that are popular with "normies" like AoT and Demon Slayer.

Some people like action, some like romance, some people like comedy. If there were not many genres, there would never be so many people watching Anime. I mean would someone who likes watching only action watch a romance?

It never crossed my mind to think about anime merchandise man. Not many people would think about purchasing merchandise for an anime which got average rating so that's a valid point.

I’m not talking about ratings, I’m talking about popularity.
