What causes skin to peel?

Nothing out of the ordinary or anything and your skin just starts to peel of like an animal changing skin. Any medical terms or any information on this?
 
It's nothing but the dead skin.
Well, if the skin doesn't have any moisture, then you could see all the peeling.
 
I think having less of a nutrient can cause it as the skin around my finger nails tend to peel, but its nothing major though.
