First time i heard about underground idol is grom Gantz : G, my favorite character Morishita is a member of underground Idol. From what i research about them.. underground idol is an idol group without agency and they use their own money to perform (costume and accesories), they move like guerilla militia from stage to stage (in Gantz : G Morishita perform in somekind of club), and where are they going to perform is rarely known because they usually only use social media to promote themself
From what i heard being an underground idol usually not a main job of their member, they usually doing this as hobby, their only seek for fun or additional income. But of course for some people being an underground idol is one of their step to become major idol
