Well, that doesn't apply all the time.
There are many young anti protagonists.

Obviously there are exceptions, there always are but usually they are on the older side. In Naruto for example, Zabuza, Orochimaru, and most members of the Akatsuki are in their prime. Kabuto wasn't, and so he returned.

Well, I see your point now :D
But at the end, if given a choice, I believe Zabuza would have changed his path entirely.
