Manga Scan Groups

The groups that scan the manga have the following works.
These groups are found online, you can work in them with little skills, but as it is voluntary work no money is paid :)
Basic requirement for working as a part of scanlation group is given :D

Raw provider - These people provide raw manga to the group. They have access to raw manga and give them to the scanner or scan it themselves.

Scanner
- These people scan the raw manga given by the providers (In many groups, Scanner play the role of raw provider too). They are later sent to the Editor/Cleaner/Translator. The scanner must have a proper machine by which the scans of manga should be clear and can be sent to the editor/translator/cleaner.

Translator
- These people translate the manga from the original language to the wanted language. For example, Japanese to English, Chinese to English, etc. If a manga is to be translated from Japanese to English, the translator must be fluent in reading Japanese and translating it into English. If mistakes are made in English, they can be later edited by the Proofreaders. The translated script can be saved in notepad, word document or any other format, then be sent to the Editor/Cleaner.

Cleaner - These people clean the text in original language, clean SFX, re-draw necessary parts (If re-drawers are not available), level the raw scan, etc. For this basic skills in Photoshop is required. Or in rare cases using even paint is fine for cleaning the text in bubbles.
in Photoshop, the original layer is first duplicated so that it is convenient for the typesetter to doing the typesetting.

Re-drawer - These people re-draw the necessary parts of the manga which were cleaned during cleaning process (happens mostly while cleaning SFX). They also need basic skills to re-draw the panels properly in Photoshop or any other convenient application. Later, these cleaned pages are sent to the typesetters. (In format of Photoshop, namely .psd)

Typesetter
- The typesetters put the translated text in proper location in proper bubbles. Different kinds of fonts and and basic skill in Photoshop is needed in this.
The files are then saved in the format in which they are uploaded in the internet, with a copy of the file in Photoshop format. They are then sent to proofreaders and quality checkers for criticism of the final view of manga.

Editor - In many groups, the work of typesetting and cleaning is done by the same person. This person is called the editor. (Re-drawing can be included or excluded in editing according to the groups)

Proofreader
- Proofreaders go through the manga to check for any mistakes in typesetting or editing or any other flaws. No Photoshop skills are required for this, but instead the proofreader should be fluent in the language he is doing proofreading of. If errors are found in  proofreading, the typesetter/re-drawer/typesetter/editor is informed about it and changes are made. After this, the manga is sent to the quality checker for a last time.

Quality Checker - The work of quality checker is to check the quality of the final material before getting published. No Photoshop skills are required in this.

  • Even though, there are works in which Photoshop is not required, it is always better if you know how to use it.
  • Not all of these works are done in all the groups.
  • Some groups teach the novice to how to do cleaning and typesetting. And a few of them also provide Photoshop.

Feel free to ask any questions, leave feedback and please notify me if any of these things are incorrect so I can correct them.

How much do they get paid to do all these task? Can they use GIMP instead of Photoshop?
They don't get paid as it is voluntary work.
And it depends on the scan groups, some are fine even with paint if you do your work right but some ask for Photoshop only. Also because pixel handling isn't as good as Photoshop in GIMP, I think I have heard so.

Proofreader and quality checker are the only roles that non_japanese people can do :(

Actually, translator is the only role which needs people to know Japanese.
Others can be done by anyone :D

Even though we have a scanner, it is impossible to get raw version of the manga in India :(

hard to believe they don't get paid for all of that, specially since the raw provider always risks legal trouble.

How come they risk legal trouble?

Providing a purchased copy with copyrights and then translating is violating laws.
So, there are subjected to punishment, if the word gets out.

Hmm. It is a good idea Sebastian but I don't think you alone can handle the whole group as I am not going to be that free the coming year.
Plus it is not as easy as it may seem to you. If you want I can train you for sometime, you can recruit some people and open the scanlation group later. As long as the legal matter is concerned I will do some research on it too. There are lots of law books at my home :P

I know Japanese. I can translate (at least at the level of a novice)
Plus that is the whole reason why I asked you to recruit people, we also need a raw provider.
