MAL was like the big thing when I started getting into anime and honestly I don't score anime and all I need to do is update episodes since I watch a lot of on-going anime and MAL's classic design is good enough for that.
My main reason for using MAL is that it's an amazing database and like the scores for anime that are pre-2017 are super reliable. Not to mention keeping track of seasonal stuff.

i really don't know much about anilist but i use mal a lot
it's got many series and you can get so much information from it

I just use MAL to see what is coming, as for lists on what I've watched I keep my own list that I have backups of and save, as you may never know when those site trackers can go down.
