Main protagonist who had gone through a lot

Is there any other character who had gone through a lot more than Kaneki? There were some white haired characters which says something about the trauma that they have experienced, but I highly doubt they have gone through a lot like Kaneki.

A lot of shounen anime protagonists have gone through a lot, like edward from FMAB, Naruto. And also Okabe from Steins;Gate, Lucy from Elfen Lied(shit anime though), Shinji Ikari from Evangelion.

i feel sorry for all of them but not lucy in elfen lied. she killed many people and is ruthless. i don't want to think of someone like that actually evolving in this world.
