In your opinion what makes an edgy anime Edgy?

I am sure most of the time, the intense battles or games makes an anime edgy but is it the same for you?
Or do you think the sudden new attacks can make an anime edgy? They can be from the protagonist or the antagonist.

It's to just meet the expectations then it wouldn't have that effect at all. Many anime depend on suddenly getting intense out of nowhere.

Anything that can surprise people watching that anime. I wouldn't want to watch something on repeat with a boring story line but that hadn't happened so far.
