I love anime with 40 min first episodes for new seasons.

It makes world of difference getting back into the story and mood of the show. For some it's just the first episode of the anime and for some they do it at the start of any a season after a long break. It shows they actually care abut the viewer's experience and it's something high quality animes do a lot more than regular ones.
 
i don't think i am fan of big episodes lol
but you are right about creating the correct momentum and trying to make us interested in that series
