How important is episode 1 for you?

The point I’m getting at, is if you saw a 5 star rated show and you didn’t like it, that doesn’t mean you have to like it. That doesn’t make the show inherently bad, but it’s not for you.

I see your point now.
But it's like this. Most of the time, I end up liking shows that have more than 8 in MAL.

Even in genres you don't like?

I have noticed that if you like certain genres that MAL loves, the community gives it a high rating, but if it's one they don't like, people will knock it down. I've seen disparaging views on stuff like that when you compare multiple aggregate sites. I've seen it quite a few times where season 1 will have a mediocre score, and then season 2 will have a lot higher score. It's not because season 2 increased in quality, it's because people already hopped off the train when season 1 happened.

Usually I search too the genres I like.
I don't dislike many series and I am not a fan of too intense emotions and it can be anything. You are right about season 2 having a higher rating. But usually if something is too popular, season 2 will have too much expectations and it fails to get the high rating like it's prequel.

I think people forget that this stuff is based off of a manga, or light novel, so they think there should be a massive change in quality, then get upset that it's the same as season 1.

Well, I am one of those people so, I can't say much. But you are right.
It becomes a norm to expect too much action in the next season, usually.

MAL ratings don’t mean shit if you don’t like a show.

That's right
I haven't been able to like Gintama, even after watching 100 episodes

Yeah, when you read a manga, it's not like there's a distinction that goes "here is where season 1 will end and season 2 will begin", it just goes "alright, we're on chapter 36 now...", unless the series goes by arcs.

I have seen some situations where a genre isn't popular, but one particular series got a ton of hype, then it blew up, despite not doing anything really different. A good example is Zombieland Saga. Outside of the fact that they're zombies, it was the same as iDolm@ster and Love Live.

I agree with Zombieland Saga.
They reminded me a lot of K-ON and AKB0048 series. I got it now. Usually anime skips a lot of content from manga.

I have mixed feelings on the skipped content. Sometimes you're not actually missing anything, and on the other hand, you'll think "well that woulda been made more sense".

Manga readers always believe manga content is good.
But sometimes, anime is mellowed out and it leaves a good impression too

I've seen some comedies I thought were hilarious, then read the manga and got disappointed. Sometimes adding movement to the jokes makes it flow better.

I like comedy too.
Usually people don't like that comedy or innuendos in anime. It happened a lot with Black butler anime. The death god in it isn't so funny unlike in the anime.

I think it's because innuendos and toilet humor are seen as juvenile, and for the most part it is, but I friggen love Seitokai Yakuindomo.

I see them like that as well
There are many who don't like Gintama because of such humor.

That's how i see things too, rating and hype didn't effecting me
Yeah, if I don't find the show interesting, or it's a genre I know I don't like, I don't see the need to hop on the hype train.

As I have ADHD and a short attention span, if it doesn’t grab my attention on the first episode, then I drop it.
