Have you noticed the complete lack of anime shows set in Imperial japan?

Wind Rises and Grave of the Fireflies maybe? Miyazaki is perhaps the only one I know who has openly criticized that period. It also doesn't help that the West and weebs tend to romanticise Japan. Not just with anime/anime girls, but with the Samurai period, their current culture, gaming (Nintendo, Sega, Playstation, etc) so something like that probably wouldn't fly.

They definitely skip over WW2 a lot, except if it’s specifically about the atomic bombing like in Barefoot Gen, but there are a handful of stuff from Taisho period (1912-1926) and that time period is seeing a bit of a revival in at least the live action sense, mostly from the fashion.

Imperial Japan also started in the late 1800’s with the Meiji period, which only the early years are romanticized about because of the identity crisis they were going through. The Taisho period is kind of forgotten about because it was sandwiched between two really big periods in their history.

They do show it with live action stuff, but not much with anime. It’s possible it has to do with exporting it to other countries, so you wanna show off “the cool stuff”.

Me being an American, our movies and shows targeted at kids tend to skip over almost anything in regards to Native Americans, and we don’t really see much from Europe in regards to the scramble for Africa, and that colonial period.

Yeah, revisionist history is a plague but there is very little one can do to stop a country from publishing their own "facts".

They at least try to teach us about the Native American genocide in school, but if your movies and TV shows ignore it, it’s easily forgotten about by the general public.

America and Germany at least add our genocides to our education system, but Japan is kind of notorious for ignoring WW2 and the second Sino-Japanese war in their compulsory education system. They basically just learn ancient Chinese history, and their own history lessons stop around Meiji.

It's nothing compared to what actual authoritarian countries do. Look at china. There's ignoring some topics and then there is actively rewriting history.

Pretty much. When I took Russian history, our professor was a Russian immigrant and showed us some some history books from the Soviet era. They basically said Stalin was Jesus and invented electricity and everything, and through his kindness he gave them to the evil capitalists to show off the power of Communism.
