I also stopped watching anime for a while and have never read much manga. Now, However, that is a different story; I've been keeping up to date with 5 different Manga's and am watching through Darker Than Black (Finally!). So, I shall try and interact with you all more from this point on.

Lot's of people hate on it with out even reading it, Which I believe to be really stupid as my view is: "sure, it might not be Original but that doesn't mean it's not good." I just hope the Mangaka and Translator keeps going with it.
Genre's I like? Hmm, I do like 'Darker' ones but I need to be in the right mood, Unless it's something like the Zero Escape Games, Then I'm always ready for that masterpiece. I'm not a fan of Romance as I can't really relate? I dunno, I've never felt that kind of love so I just don't get it. My friend made me watch Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, which was alright, didn't make me cry or anything like everyone said it would. I just kinda shrugged and moved on, whereas Code Geass, didn't make me cry, but hit the feels. Shounen Animes, I don't mind but most of them are WAYYY overrated. (BNH is a perfect example of this). Slice of Life is great, especially comedy ones like Nichijou or Asobi Asobase .I'm not sure what you'd class Mairimashita Iruma-kun as, but my lord its good, so I suppose I like that too.
That's pretty much my view on different Genres.

if you want the tragedy anime, to make you shed tears, try watching wolf's rain
it's just too sad and i cried a lot while watching that. code geass is also sad but not to this level.
i am so glad you like shonen genres.
