Nobody thought comic book stuff would get to normie levels, so it's possible with anime. It's honestly a lot more popular now than it was 10 years ago. Back then, it was mostly kids or neckbeards that watched it, and the availability of sites like Crunchyroll allowing more access to different stuff, now it's easy for me to find normal people in real life to discuss anime with.
Maybe we just need more shows that appeal to non-anime fans that get advertised outside of just anime sites, and also big budget movies that aren't tied to a series.

Even if they are inferior to actual anime, people prefer them which is hard to understand at this point.

It's possible, it's still growing now. But sadly people associated anime with kid's show, and i think that's what holding back the growth
