Default subscription to a thread

is it possible to do this? you could send out emails when people post to your thread automatically. people would see them and might come back to see the replies

Do not do this! It's seriously a form of spam as I've visited sites in the past that have done this and I've woken up to my email box spammed with thread replies.

I know you want people coming back, but this would most likely keep them away.

I wouldn't want my mail to get all the replies too. May be it's possible get an email for an alert?

Users have an option to subscribe to a thread. By making it default, we are taking the option away from the user. 
We wouldn't want to do that as it's annoying

unless forum software has changed the settings, the only way is get alerts for all replies, just not one.

That sounds serious trouble. It would be bad if I see mails only pertaining to a particular thread that doesn't have anything to do with our replies.
