Cheerful main protagonists vs gloomy main protagonists

For me, it totally depends on the type of anime.
For example, If you take shounen genre, I'd like the Protagonist to be a cheerful or even a childish one like Naruto in Naruto, Gon in Hunter x Hunter, Midoriya in My Hero Academia.
If you take Philosophical anime or something that has a mature take on life, then i'd prefer the protagonist to be a more mature and cool headed character like Lelouch in Code Geass, Spike in Cowboy Bebop, Vash in Trigun and those guys in Samurai Champloo.

I see
That makes sense now. But Vash in Trigun is like Luffy half of the time

True lol.. i love that both Luffy and Vash are both silly at times and act more mature than anyone else when they need to get serious.

Well, I don't remember Luffy ever being so serious about anything.
He is always funny

The video above, when Usopp fights with him, Merry Go's death, Ace's death and a ton of other instances. Granted he's always zen but there's moments where he's not.

Gloomy characters are not bad man.
But I would rather see a cheerful main protagonist. It could make things interesting.
