Gloomy is not always cool, i've seen gloomy characters but also lame or depressing, but yes generally speaking most of them might be classified as cool
I don't have any specific prefence for this but i do like moderation, i don't like if the character overly cheerful or overly gloomy

mostly depends on the storyline going on. But I like cheerful the better if I had to pick one.

most of the basic protagonists are overly cheerful
and i think there is no other way to describe them but sometimes they can be naive too like luffy
