Are military anime, dark?

Why are military anime always dark? They deal with wars and plots but they don't have to be dark the entire way.
Or is it just me who is feeling this way?

Last I checked a military is formed to defend someone or a country, not something that can be made light hearted. I think the closets you'll get to it is, Gate and if it counts in a way, Girls Und Panzer.

Not necessarily. High school anime that have a military setting are serious and sometime dark yes but they have lots of moments of levity. A good example would be the first season of Full Metal Panic. I'd say it gives as much focus to comedy as it does to action, which is either a positive for some people, if they want both, or it's a negative for people, if they want only one of them. Although in my opinion FMP does comedy better than action. Which is why I think Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu, the second season that has no action whatsoever, is the greatest comedy anime of all time.

Youjo senki is and FMAB are pretty military heavy but have a lot of non dark stuff happening too.

I didn't know that you watched youjo senki man. I heard about it from Clara and Madarauciha dropped it.
No one ever brought up in conversation again and fmab is great man and I agree that it's not dark but youjo senki is dark man

Youjo has its light moments but is all around rather dark.

That anime is rather dark. But not all the military anime are dark

The only military anime that I have watched so far is Violet Evergarden and it wasn't dark. I don't know about any others though so I can't say for sure

That is not what I would classify as dark though.
I would call more like gore and monsters and that kind of thing dark.
Violet evergarden was not in the least dark
