Astroboy and Pokemon help get anime into the states but it was Toonami that really laid the foundation and set motion the anime fandom and industry we have today as explained by this well put together video:

 
there are many classical anime first but you wouldn't know that anime exists until something gets immensely popular.
it's like that for me.
