Will an anime ever be as respected as classic film/literature?

What do you all think?
I don't think it's a possibility as of now. Do you guys agree with that? Or do you think anime can be respected as such in the near future?

A lot of Studio Ghibli stuff is very well respected in the film industry.

A lot of the respect, or lack of, I think is due to how the community is as opposed to the medium itself. The community still hasn’t really grown out of being associated with neckbeards, and it’s not like the community is doing much to change that image either.

I have heard so much about Totoro and Spirited away.
Yet I don't see anyone giving them 'respect' and it's all about the 'good plot' and not about the 'literature'.

They get plenty of actual respect in the film industry. They also have aspects that film buffs love, so they get a ton of respect in their attention to detail in their art quality and cinematography. A lot of their older stuff is still impressive when you realize they were done before computers became the standard form of animation. Everything they did before Princess Mononoke is 100% hand drawn.

May be I haven't been able to convey my actual thoughts just there.
I mean the actual myths and local beliefs getting the throne in some anime and then the anime getting the recognition and respect for the same.

I still don’t know what you’re trying to get at with that.

Well, there are animations in our local channels which depicts our literature and local myths and beliefs as well.
They are highly respected and recognized by all.
I was just looking for the same thing in anime and nothing more.

I think it’s because most of those shows aren’t famous outside of Japan. The Tale of Princess Kaguya by Studio Ghibli is the only one that got any traction outside of Japan, mostly because Ghibli made it. Shows like Gegege no Kitaro or Nippon Mukashi Banashi (the one that ran from 1975-1994) will get you blank stares outside of Japan.

I see.
I will certainly looks into them as long as it's recognized and respected by Japanese folks, then that's all that matters

Being recognized as art by some old white men in Hollywood isn't the validation people are looking for to be honest.

I mean some films probably get mainstream recognition from time to time but I'm not really sure about what the consensus is among the Japanese. @Grungie probably knows better.

I was thinking of local animation series of Hanuman, Chota Bheem and other stuff. As they deserve respect and recognition, I was just looking for the same in anime.

I think.. it's not that important whether anime become classic literature or not

I see.
Sometimes it makes some difference and the respect we give to them is different as well.
