Why nowadays people want villains to be "profound" and "insightful"?

Nowadays antagonists are rather clever.

Rather than cruel they are very smart these days. Why do you think that?
 
Probably to flesh out the character, as opposed to just being an obstacle. Monster of the week battles do get tiresome when you reach a certain age.
 
Because they have potential that can be used to enhanced the series. Developing the antagonist could be fun too, they can enrich the story

The antagonist in Monster anime, Yohan is smarter that anyone in that anime. Yet people like that anime a lot.
