What do you think could be the reason here?
How come it's getting attacked a lot lately? Do you guys know anything about the reason?
If it due to COVID?

Anime’s always been attacked, so it’s not like it’s a new thing.

Lately it's a lot.
People think it's fine to trash talk other interests as they have more time now

I honestly hadn't ecen realized that is a thing.

I have noticed a shift through the years though, and that is that some decades ago, anime was attacked by people that didn't understand the culture emerging from it. Parents grew up with Kimba and Candy-Candy not knowing they were anime but were alarmed by the Pokemon craze and people cosplaying and stuff. Since it was kind of niche, most people saw it odd.

Lately, it is more like the same people in anime attack other anime and groups of people because of their tastes or subculture. The gatekeeping started. You're not a true anime fan if you haven't watched this anime, or if you don't agree that that one is rubbish. There's a counter-culture and questioning just how over hyped are some "classics" and how others qualufied as trash have merits to them. I think questioning is good and discussions to explore that can be quite entertaining. The problem comes with impossing opinions as facts and attacking others due to them not aligning with your views.

It's especially bad when it comes to shonen anime. I constantly see people arguing with each other about whether Attack on Titan or One Piece is better, or if Black Clover is better than MHA. Grown adults that too, looks silly.

It is pretty ironic seeing grown adults arguing over manga targeted at people half their age, though it’s also not exactly unusual.

The ones I enjoy are people saying their preferred Shonen Jump series is more mature and for adults, but stuff like MHA or Naruto that’s also in SJ? No, that’s for kids.

naruto is not exactly adult material
but people after watching it since they're childhood can't let it go and the fight a lot for it

I think a lot of it stems from people watching anime needing validation. They feel personally insulted when someone says "anime is for kids", I mean there's nothing wrong with that. And then they argue about a parody character like Saitama not being more powerful than Goku.

That seems like a nicer version of what I was thinking of. I was gonna say they don’t have a life outside of their hobby. It does seem really common when people’s hobbies become their personality.

You know what you are more accurate. This happens a lot more with gaming and films unfortunately, since they are exponentially more popular. It was a shitshow when the last two Star Wars films, and The Last of Us Part II released. Death threats, actors quitting social media, etc.

I think I gotta agreee with a lot of what you're saying. I think too Shonen tend to have a lot of arguments over a protagonist being stronger than another from adifferent anime. I don't mind it for fun but some people get serious to the point of harrassing who doesn't share their point of view.

For a lot of people it is hard to separate themselves from the things they like.

this here is true
if you like something and if someone doesn't, i don't get why people go out of their way to make others like that too.

Maybe people are getting tired of attacking video games? :P

I still see people bitching about The Last of Us Part II. Like today Ghost of Tsushima announced multiplayer out of the blue and the comment section is full of people needlessly arguing about it.

The irony of the video game community:

”Bawww, why do game devs treat us like we’re 13 year olds?”

>proceeds to act like 13 year olds

you are right as well
