Why does shojo anime got a female protagonist always?

is it because it's intended for girls?
or is it for some other reason? i think it's because of the target audience.

I haven't really seen too many shojo anime to give the correct information.
I do believe Clannad to be a shojo anime and it's got a male protagonist

i am sorry to hear that star
but usually all the girls like shojo genre for the other reasons like it's good plot.

The target audience are female man.
They would want to put themselves in the role of the main protagonist.

Real Girl is the only one I can think of that’s actually Shojo, and stars a guy.

I saw the first season, wasn’t bad, but I had no desire to see season 2.

It’s about some introvert nerdy guy who only has one friend, and out of nowhere this sketchy preppy girl tells him they’re now dating. There’s a lot of drama between the two because neither are communicating with each other.

that sounds like the real deal.
most of the time, it's the nerdy or strong girl trying to stand strong all the time
