Why do some popular anime fall into obscurity very quickly?

just thinking out loud lol
and why is that? somehow popular anime should have that popularity until it fades but not like this.

Some of them aren’t really that memorable, and others don’t have new content, so each passing year less and less people hear about it.

There’s also the situation where shows that were popular online before Crunchyroll somewhat disappeared, because a lot of people were watching the newer stuff, and the older shows they saw on TV, and didn’t know about a lot of the old stuff that didn’t have new content.

They’re not hard to find, unless they’re really old. People just need to talk about them.

lol but not like that
like newbies wouldn't know once upon a time sao was really popular and all after a decade from now.

SAO left a big enough footprint to not be forgotten.

It's normal here.
Sure enough some anime can get very popular and something else comes up with some other form of unique story

i thought you must have heard like how log horizon is said to be 'sao done right' grungie
but only some people wouldn't accept that. and sao2 is a failure.

Log Horizon doesn't have a massive media franchise, and it's always gonna be overshadowed by the fact that SAO came out before it.

It doesn't matter on quality if someone else came out before and got more famous before you.

It was something different that had been seen in awhile up to that point. There’s a huge gap in time between SAO and Dot Hack, so it generated a lot of buzz when it was announced in that factor alone.

Also the whole “you die in the game you die in real life” gained a lot of attention, and had some crossover appeal to Walking Dead and Game of Thrones fans because it started out as “woah, who’s gonna die this week?” deal.

The SAO hype didn't die as quickly as you're acting like it is. The initial "wow" factor didn't die off for quite awhile, and there's still quite a few ride or die SAO fans
