When you like a main protagonist, is it because you found something to relate?

Lots of protagonists are pretty much self-insert characters, someone who gratifies power fantasies, especially teenagers. Kirito is an example.
More than relatability it's about goals and personalities. Naruto is a standard example. Disregarded by the village, wants to become the Hokage, wins over the entire village in the Pein arc and undergoes a great Hero's journey in the process.
I don't really need a sad backstory, their actions should speak for their character development. Something like what Edward undergoes in FMAB.

Most of the time, it is the case.
I don't really like any main protagonist so it doesn't apply to me

So you like other protagonist, why you like them?

So you don't need something to relate to like them

Not really.
I don't play favorites and I just watch anime to enjoy it impartially

They need to be written well that's all. I mean there's no way I can relate to an over-powered main protagonist for example, but if he or she is written well and the story is told from their perspective in an interesting way I'd definitely watch it.

Cool. Who is your all time favorite character?

Difficult to say. That's one thing I haven't really thought about, especially after watching 150+ something anime. A toss up between Light and Lelouche I guess.

Well, I don't think it's hard to not to play favorites.
In fact, I believe it's quite easy

How? Any tips?

Well, if you watch it just for entertainment, then you wouldn't develop any favorites.
By not getting involved too deeply, we can remain partial to anything.
