What's the deal with fan subs for anime?

Do you like them? Or do you think they are nothing much at all?
I am sure they try their very best to give us the accurate description and all in the first place.

They used to be the only way to watch anime that wasn’t getting translated in English.

I see.
I don't remember such series. The fan subs I have come across are popular anime like One piece. I don't see the point of translating something that's already translated.

This was before Crunchyroll came out and Netflix having much of any anime. A lot of the shows that weren’t battle anime 10+ years ago were all watched through fansubs.

Most fan subs now just repackage the subtitles from Crunchyroll and Funimation and package them as a download file.

I used to hear about this Opforum.
It's focused only on One piece and it used to release fan subs of its own. I never saw the point to it and Claraviolet used to be a member there

The fan subs for One Piece don’t know the difference between the Marines and the Navy. It’s still causing confusion in the community.

Marines are basically the navy’s ground forces. The Japanese word for navy is kaigun. That’s what One Piece calls them, so that would make them the navy. The Japanese word for marines is kaiheitai, which is not what they’re called in One Piece.

I’m not actually sure why the fan translations all them the marines, unless they just went off of what their hats say. That and it’s probably the fans thinking that 4kids messed up by calling them the navy in their dub, and based on their other changes, they assumed they translated that wrong too.

Fan translations used to be better than the official stuff, but that was also several years ago when the official stuff was based on the censored for TV or whatever alterations they did to the dialog. Then the official translations stepped up their game, and people found out that the fan translations also messed up.

An infamous one was with the character Holo in Spice and Wolf. The fan translations called her Horo because of L vs R issue in Japanese. Well then season 2 came out and she wrote her name down in the show in the Latin alphabet. Turns out her name was canonically spelled Holo. Whoops.

i think it's because they want to do something for their favorite anime and nothing more lol
you must have come across such hardcore fans lol
