i have a feeling that i know the answer.
character drawings? but what if the background scenes are very beautiful?
will you call that a great art too?

Can't define. It's like music, you just know it but it's difficult to put it into words. Usually though it's related to the kind of stuff you grew up liking. As for me I like Studio Ghibli's art and KyoAni's art to be the most aesthetically beautiful, Ghibli's art especially is magical.

then i think it's difficult determine what a good art is.
i usually like very beautiful art. something like totally captivated

Recently i watch 5 centimeters per second, it was beautiful. The art, animation, soundtrack, sound effect, everything!!

To me, and i guess i say this as a designer mostly XD, the beauty of an anime is the color pallete, i have found so many bad drawing/animated animes, but if the colors are right, i'll probably watch it until the end, an example of bad drawn/animated but good colors is an anime that's airing right now, Mao-Sama Retry!

What about old anime?
Their animation is bad but I don't think those colors are bad man

Oh absolutely, it doesn't matter if it's 10, 20 or 40 years, to me if the colors are right, it looks beautiful, for example, my favorite anime of the 90's is Saber Marionette J.

I found the anime Hiiro no Kakera to be rather boring, but damn if not most of the scenes in most episodes were a perfect shade of red/orange in a fantastic fall color look that kept me watching more.

How is the animation bad? They used an entirely different means of animating things and a lot of them still hold up today. Tonari no Totoro is from 1988 and it still looks amazing, I watched it like 3 weeks back for the first time.

Sorry man.
I should have said it doesn't appeal to me instead. I like the movie Totoro but I am not a fan of the animation

I see. I don't get it because animation is just movement and it's done supremely well in that but to each his own.
