What do you think of torture in anime?

i don't get why people need to be tortured most of the time.
yes i agree to it when the anime character is ruthless and needs a lesson but most of the time, it's meaningless and cruel

It doesn't have any appeal to me but when it's required for the plot to trigger some plot point, I don't really care.

if i don't like the character i want to see it getting what it deserved but if it's just to add cruelty for antagonist,i don't want to see it
