Some people want to either fit in, or act like they’re “in the know, but not put the effort into it.

but sometimes if you don't like something, you need to say lol and i am sure many anime fans don't do that for popular anime.

It’s possible that they’re just younger, so they’re still in that high school mindset of trying to fit in, or just never outgrew that phase of their life.
I feel like I’m too old to care about what the cool kids are into, so I just do my own thing. If I was already interested in it, cool, if not, whatever.

My experience with BL fan girls, is that they’re annoying. Every conversation about any form of entertainment gets twisted into a conversation about their gay ship. The fujoshi character in anime isn’t far from reality.
