Looking back at years ago.. i remember Dragon Ball, yeah the original Dragon Ball, not Z. Do you still remember about Dragon Ball? Yeah.. it was a parody series of Monkey King/Journey to the West, comedy and adventure is the main theme, nothing serious about it

It was a funny adventure of Goku, Bulma, Yamcha, Uron, Puaru, Muten Roshi, Krillin, Tien Shinhan and Chaotzu. At that time i never expected that Dragon Ball will evolved into what they become in Z or Super. Everything seems different, the comedy and adventure getting replaced by action, plenty of action haha.. i think, to new fans that start from Z they won't expected that this series start as comedy

Even author like Yashihiro Togashi use this formula as well, um.. not too drastic but it seems like that, in Yu Yu Hakusho everything start as nothing serious, but things getting more serious as the story progressed. To some degrees.. i feel like Naruto also applying this formula

Anyway.. i don't know if this formula still applied on newer series or not

i think it's applied everywhere.
even one piece started out as a funny and good series but it's nothing like that now.
and i don't think many long series are coming out now

Really? One Piece is serious series?

now, it can be called that way.
it became serious all of a sudden and it lost so much of it's charm along the way

Just like transition between Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z

It's about putting you in a sense of normalcy and gradually taking you to wherever the author intends to go. Some of my favourite movies begin in a somewhat "light" tone as well. Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man, etc. Unless the movie or anime is an explicitly dark and tries to be cerebral this is common with stories that are long.

But in Dragon Ball it's too different, even the drawing style change that much

I haven't seen it but are you talking about DB and DBZ or within DB itself?

From an outsider's perspective it makes sense that Toriyama was experimenting since he basically changed the genre forever.

I mean from DB to DBZ. Well i guess you're right, he need to adapt for more suitable style for action
