The importance of main villain

So.. for me to make a great story, you need a great villain, i think i've said this before. Why we need great villain? Because they are the one who makes the story roller and they are the main force that drive the entire story

First me make the background world for the story, put the main villain there, give them a conflict or two to make them have legit reason to achieve whatever they want from that conflict, and make sure that he want to achieve something that give danger to the entire world. The motive doesn't have to be evil, just egoistic is enough to enrich their character with more taste. Last.. put our Hero there to stop the villain, sprinkle some backstory and done! Haha..

But well to be honest i'm not sure this formula can work for manga/anime, especially the ones with many arcs and long run series, because when i come with this formula my base was video game, where they are kinda different from manga/anime

But anyway.. i still think great villain make a manga/anime way better

Edit : I was inspired by Kefka, Sephiroth, Luca Blight

To me not all the stories have to go with a villain, but man it does improve a lote when there's one, specially a villain that you can love more than the main character, those are the villains that really stand out.

Like your example, Kefka to me is the best villain in a Final Fantasy game, when you think of Final Fantasy VI you think Terra and Kefka, no one ells matters XD

I do agree with that.
No matter what it is, people would always believe the main antagonist had done it. Orochimaru is one such example
